Why You Should Excercise
We know the common motivation for exercise is to lose weight. While having a healthy weight for your body type can be good for you, it shouldn't be your only priority when exercising. Regular exercise is a great relief of stress. It can increase your endorphins which helps to improve your mood. Exercis, like weight lifting, helps keep your bones, joints and muscles strong as you age. It can also increase your ability to perform everyday activities and prevent falls.
4 Tips for Moving More
Adding any activity to your day can help to increase the calories your body burns. For some, heading to the gym is best, but there are plenty of ways to add movement without a gym membership.
Tip 1: Count Your Steps
The recommended daily step count is 10,000, but it can be daunting when first starting. Choosing a goal of 2,250 steps a day is an ideal place to begin. A person of average height and weight walking at a regular speed of around three mph will take approximately 2,250 steps to walk a mile. To help keep track of steps, you'll need a pedometer. The pedometer you choose depends on the features you like, but you have essentially three ways to track steps. You can use one of the many apps on your phone, but this is not the most accurate way to count steps. You could instead choose a cheap pedometer that clips to your clothes or shoes. The recommended way to track steps is with a smartwatch like a Fitbit or Apple Watch. Smartwatches track your heart rate and are the most accurate way to count steps and calories.
Tip 2: Look for More Ways to Walk
One of the easiest ways to add more exercise to your day is by adding more ways to move. Walking around the block each morning or on the treadmill is great, but you can add steps easily by following a few simple tricks. If you work away from home, try parking your car farther away from your office door. It may mean a quick jog inside on mornings you're running late, but it will increase your step count. Do you take the elevator up to your office? Why not take the stairs instead? Assuming you don't work 20 floors up, taking the stairs is great exercise. Even walking up one flight of stairs will do you more good than you think. Another great trick if you work close to restaurants and like to order lunch is to set your food for pick up. You won't have to pay a delivery tip, and you can add more exercise to your day.
Tip 3: Use Your Pets
Take a look outside in the mornings or after work, and you'll often see the same people every day out walking their dogs. If your backyard is fenced, the dog can run out back, but taking your fur baby for a walk will benefit you both. It provides bonding time with a pet and gets your body moving. Don't feel like going for a walk? Grab a frisbee or a tennis ball. It's common knowledge that most dogs love to play catch. Throwing a ball or frisbee out back will wear your pet out while you increase your heart rate. One of the best ways to get your heart rate up and wear out your dog can be to play chase with your pet. Dogs love playing chase. You likely won't catch your pet, but you'll have fun trying. Don't have a dog? If having a dog is an investment you are willing to make, adoption might be something to try.
Tip 4: Make it Family Time
Exercise doesn't have to be something you do alone. Finding someone to work out with can make it something you look forward to doing. Grab a friend, partner, or the kids, and get moving. Have kids? Try a nature walk instead of a regular walk. Your kids will love exploring while you walk or seeing little critters scurry across the path. With enough friends, you could organize a kickball or baseball game. It doesn't need to be competitive, just fun. Date night can also be a chance for you and a partner to exercise. You could go bowling, duck for cover in laser tag, or sink shots in minigolf. All three of these choices are good fun and good exercise.
