Last week, we were excited to host a representative from New Balance at our store, offering a unique opportunity for our valued customers to connect and engage. This event not only allowed for personal interactions but also served as a perfect occasion to delve into the rich history of the New Balance brand, showcasing its evolution and commitment to quality.
The presence of the New Balance representative created a vibrant atmosphere, where customers could ask questions and learn more about the brand's legacy. We took this chance to share fascinating insights into New Balance's journey, highlighting its dedication to innovation and performance in the world of athletic footwear.
William J. Riley established the New Balance footwear brand in 1906, driven by a vision that transcended mere foot protection. An Irish immigrant who settled in the Boston region, Riley sought to design a shoe that would provide genuine support for the foot. His inspiration came unexpectedly from observing the chickens in his backyard; as he watched them move, he became fascinated by the unique way their three-pronged feet landed and how their arches formed, creating an impeccable balance as they confidently strutted about. This keen observation sparked the innovative idea that would eventually lead to the creation of a brand synonymous with comfort and stability.
The journey of New Balance took a significant turn when Riley brought Arthur Hall on board as a salesman. Hall distinguished himself by personally visiting customers to sell shoes, opting for a more personal touch rather than relying on the conventional retail store model. This approach proved fruitful, and nearly a decade later, in 1936, Hall became a partner in the company. He shifted the focus of New Balance towards creating shoes that provided essential arch support, laying the groundwork for the brand's future innovations in footwear.
In 1938, just two years after Hall's partnership, New Balance introduced its inaugural running shoe, specifically designed to cater to the needs of the Boston Brown Bag Harriers, a local running club. This marked the beginning of a broader vision, as the company expanded its offerings to include specialized footwear for various sports, including baseball, boxing, and tennis. As New Balance gained recognition, its small team grew, reflecting the increasing demand for their innovative products and solidifying the brand's reputation in the athletic footwear market.
The leadership of New Balance transitioned when Arthur Hall decided to pass the reins to his daughter, Eleanor, and her husband, Paul Kidd. They maintained the company’s commitment to orthopedic footwear while also nurturing a burgeoning interest in athletic shoes tailored for specific sports needs. Under their stewardship, the company underwent a rebranding in 1970, becoming known as New Balance Athletic Shoe, Inc.
The next pivotal moment in the company’s history occurred in 1972 when Jim Davis acquired New Balance from the Kidds. At that time, the company operated with just six full-time employees, producing a modest 20 to 30 pairs of shoes daily. Today, New Balance has evolved into a global powerhouse, boasting over 4,000 retail locations worldwide under the rebranded name New Balance Athletics Inc., established in 2015.
The Trackster holds the distinction of being the original New Balance classic, marking a significant milestone in the world of running shoes when it was introduced in 1960 by the Kidd family. This innovative shoe was groundbreaking not only for its performance but also for its availability in a range of widths, catering to the diverse needs of runners. The success of the Trackster propelled New Balance into the sportswear arena, paving the way for subsequent models, including the iconic 320, which proudly showcased the now-famous “N” logo for the first time.
Among the celebrated offerings from New Balance, the 574 casual shoe stands out, boasting an impressive selection of over ten colorways to suit various styles and preferences. Additionally, the 327 model has emerged as a notable favorite, further solidifying New Balance's reputation for blending classic aesthetics with modern flair. Each of these shoes not only reflects the brand's commitment to quality and comfort but also its ability to evolve while maintaining a strong connection to its rich heritage in athletic footwear.
